以热导池为检测器的气相色谱法分析气体中一氧化碳和二氧化碳时只能检测到较高的含量,对于气体中μg级一氧化碳和二氧化碳的分析受热导池检测器检测限的影响热导池法不能满足分析要求,而一氧化碳和二氧化碳在氢焰检测器上又无响应,因此采用了甲烷转化炉,将一氧化碳和二氧化碳加氢转化成甲烷由氢焰检测器来检测。

常规的甲烷转化炉体积较大，安装既有气路系统，又有电路系统，操作复杂。随着气相色谱仪发展的小型化，传统甲烷转化炉显示不合适。
